This lesson derives the radiation properties of the half-wave dipole, the most widely used reference antenna in practice. We begin with the sinusoidal current distribution on a half-wavelength conductor, set up the radiation integral, and carry out the pattern derivation. The result gives a directivity of D = 1.64 (2.15 dBi) and a radiation resistance of 73 ohms, two numbers that appear throughout antenna engineering as benchmarks.
