Electronics Basics #10 | Clamper Circuits: DC Level Shifting with Capacitor and Diode

Clamping Circuits (Clampers)

Instructor: Dr. Süleyman Burak ÇELİK

Learn how clamper circuits shift the entire waveform up or down without changing its shape. Unlike clippers that cut peaks, clampers preserve the peak-to-peak voltage and only move the DC level. We cover: - Clipper vs clamper comparison: scissors vs elevator - Basic clamper circuit: capacitor in series, diode in parallel - Capacitor charging animation: how the DC shift develops cycle by cycle - Ideal diode example: input [+V, -V] becomes output [0, -2V] - Silicon diode example: V_m = 5V, V_d = 0.7V, output [+0.7V, -9.3V] - Biased clamper: adding a DC source to shift the reference level Also called a DC restorer. Used in TV/video signal processing. Reference: Boylestad, Electronic Devices and Circuit Theory
