Communication Basics #25 Worked Example: Microwave Link Feasibility (LINK-1 vs LINK-2)
Microwave System DesignInstructor: Dr. Süleyman Burak ÇELİK
Seventh and final midterm preparation video in the Communication Basics series. We compare two microwave links side by side and figure out which one will actually work — in light mode, step by step. LINK-1: 10 GHz, 1 mile. LINK-2: 1 GHz, unknown distance. Both share 20 dBi antennas and 2 dB cable loss. Five parts: (a) LINK-2 distance for equal FSL, (b) LINK-1 RSL, (c) LINK-2 required Po, (d) which link operates given Rx thresholds, (e) how to fix the failing link. Result: both links have the same 116.6 dB FSL, but only LINK-1 runs with a healthy +20 dB fade margin. LINK-2 falls 12.6 dB short of the −60 dBm threshold. Fix: reduce link distance. This wraps up our midterm prep batch. Final prep is up next.
